The Yazidi have only been recognized as a distinct ethnic group since 2007, but have been around much longer than that. The religion associated with the Yazidi is called Yazidism, and seems to have its roots in Zoroastrianism (a monotheistic Iranian religion) as well as ancient Mesopotamian religions. Yazidism is a monotheistic religion. Currently, the Yazidi have been targeted by the Islamic State of Iraq since August in an attempt to “purify” Iraq.
